Commemoration Ceremony in Bochum

May 7, 2021 – 3:00 p.m.
Cemetery at the Freigrafendamm, 44803 Bochum

The Bochum “Alliance Against the Far Right” and the “Children’s and Youth Ring” commemorate the 76th anniversary of the liberation from fascism and war with a memorial event at the cemetery “Freigrafendamm”. On May 8, 1945, the Second World War in Europe came to an end. For twelve years, Jews, Sinti and Roma, the disabled, homosexuals, resistance fighters of various political and religious orientations were brutally persecuted and murdered in concentration camps.

The commemoration of the liberation from fascism is a remembrance of the victims and a tribute to the women and men who resisted fascism at the greatest risk.

During the tour, Felix Lipski from the “Klub Stern” recalls the fate of Soviet prisoners of war, and members of the “Kohlengräberland-Geschichtswerkstatt” provide information about the project. The resistance against the fascist regime is the focus of the contribution by representatives of the VVN-BdA and Irmtrud Wojak (BUXUS STIFTUNG) talks about Attorney General Dr. Fritz Bauer, who was committed to the investigation and legal prosecution of Nazi crimes. Bettina Gantenberg (DGB), who will present the campaign “Bundestag Nazifrei” (Bundestag Nazi-free), will draw a connection to current developments.

The commemoration is also intended to send a clear signal of solidarity with the members of the Jewish community and against growing racism and anti-Semitism.

The planned course of the event may still change due to the Corona pandemic. The infection protection rules (keeping the minimum distance, wearing an everyday mask) will be observed.
