In times of a far-right shift and fascists in German parliaments, we would like to once again emphasize the importance of resistance against these movements. In Germany, memories of resistance against National Socialism are usually associated with places like Berlin or Munich; few people think of the Ruhr area. However, resistance was also practiced here, often with dramatic consequences.

With the book “Stories of Resistance from the Ruhr Area”, we would like to honor the courageous people who resisted and show how diverse the resistance of the workers in the Ruhr area was. As part of a project by the North Rhine-Westphalian association “Children of the Resistance” and in cooperation with the “Association of Persecuted of the Nazi Regime – Association of Anti-Fascists” (VVN-BdA ) from North Rhine-Westphalia, seven collections of reports have been created so far, from which we would like to present 14 stories that deal with the life and family histories of people who resisted in very different ways and under difficult conditions. Researched and written by relatives, the stories look back at the motivations and actions of their parents and grandparents, and also frankly show the familial consequences of resistance. The stories range from sharing and criticizing political content to the armed struggle against fascism. The authors also provide an often very personal insight into the family life of workers in Duisburg, Essen, Herne and Oberhausen during the Nazi regime. Unbroken by imprisonment, torture and persecution, these life stories show that resistance against the Nazis was possible and that it was practiced, even in the face of all possible consequences – even when it was supposedly already too late.

Design, typesetting, printing and advertising cost 5,000 euros. To publish these all-too-often untold stories as a book, we need your financial support.
